What Kind of Recovery and Results Should I Expect After Gynecomastia Surgery?

Gynecomastia, or unusually large male breasts caused by excess tissue and gland formation, is common among boys and men of all ages. It occurs when an imbalance between the male hormone testosterone and the female hormone estrogen stimulates the growth of excess glandular breast tissue, resulting in an abnormal swelling of the pectoral area.

For the estimated 50-60% of adolescent males who are affected by gynecomastia, the hormonal rebalancing that takes place just after puberty often leads to a naturally flatter chest contour by about the age of 20.

Even so, about 65% of men ages 27-92 go on to experience some degree of gynecomastia, either as a result of the natural hormonal changes that come with age or a medical condition that disrupts hormone balance. It’s also a common side effect of excess alcohol consumption and recreational drug use.

Fortunately, gynecomastia surgery — also known as male breast reduction surgery — is a simple and effective way to reduce or completely remove the excess tissue of large male breasts.

Here at Mrudangi Thakur Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, we’re proud to offer the latest advancements in gynecomastia surgery, including minimally invasive techniques that help reduce recovery time and provide excellent results. Here’s what you can expect.

Gynecomastia surgery basics

To determine the type of male breast reduction surgery that’s best for you, Dr. Thakur first evaluates your anatomy, the amount of excess skin you have, and the fatty and glandular components of your breast.

If you have a lot of excess tissue and skin, you may require a traditional open surgical mastectomy and skin resection. If your problem is less severe, however, you may be a good candidate for minimally invasive endoscopic gynecomastia surgery or even laser-assisted liposuction called Smartlipo®.

During minimally invasive endoscopic gynecomastia surgery, Dr. Thakur makes very small incisions at the edge of your areola. Then, after using liposuction to target excess fat deposits in the area, she simply pulls the unwanted glandular tissue through the incision.

With laser liposuction using Smartlipo, a thin tube containing a laser is inserted into your breast through a tiny incision. The laser’s heat does two things: It melts the fat tissue, which is gently sucked out, and it tightens the skin for a smooth-looking result.

Whenever possible, Dr. Thakur uses the least invasive technique possible to perform male breast reduction surgery.

Gynecomastia surgery recovery

Immediately following your procedure, you’ll be bandaged and given a compression garment to help minimize swelling and support your new chest contour as you heal. Depending on the extent of your procedure, you may also have a surgical drain to facilitate the removal of excess blood and fluid.

Gynecomastia surgery typically has a relatively gentle recovery period. You may feel sore during the first three days of at-home rest, but pain is usually minimal. Most men who use medication to improve their overall comfort find that over-the-counter pain relievers are sufficient.

While some men do experience a temporary loss of sensation in the treated area, in most cases, full sensation is gradually restored over the course of a few weeks or months.

Although your own recovery process depends on the extent of your procedure, your body’s rate of healing, and how closely you follow your postsurgical instructions, the average man who has a combination of liposuction and minimally invasive endoscopic gland tissue excision is able to return to work in about a week, depending on the nature of his job.

Gynecomastia surgery results

You’ll notice a trimmer, more contoured chest profile immediately after your procedure, with improved results as postsurgical swelling subsides. Your final physique should be fully apparent within three to six months of surgery.

Gynecomastia surgery produces permanent results, as long as you maintain a stable body weight and avoid using steroids and other medicines or drugs that affect your testosterone levels.

Although Dr. Thakur always attempts to conceal your incision lines along the natural contours of your chest, you may still have visible scars, but they’ll fade over time.
