Tummy Tuck or Liposuction: What’s the Best Way to Get Rid of Your Muffin Top?

Muffin top. Such a cute name for something none of us wants. Unfortunately, that excess fat and tissue that rolls over waistbands in both men and women can be extremely difficult to target, even if you’re well within your ideal weight.

If you feel like you could use a little outside help, Dr. Mrudangi S. Thakur, MD, offers two highly effective procedures that can eradicate your unwanted muffin top. She has helped many of her patients in Jefferson Valley, New York, eliminate abdominal fat and tissue through liposuction and tummy tucks, giving them smoother lines around their abdominal areas.

To help you figure out which procedure would benefit you most, here’s how each tackles the muffin top from very different directions.

Fighting fat

When it comes to fat, our bodies have their own marching orders, and they don’t necessarily align with our bathing suit goals, in either sex.

Women’s bodies are programmed to keep more fat around their abdomens in order to provide protection for their reproductive organs. So, when it comes time for weight loss, you may easily shed pounds in all other areas of your body, but your abdomen and hips can prove very difficult.

Men’s bodies are ruled by testosterone, which does a great job of keeping fat from accumulating. If, however, you’re taking more energy in than your body can keep up with, fat tends to congregate in your belly. As well, testosterone levels fall as you age, robbing you of your fat-fighting resources.

In either case, it’s understandable that you want to get rid of those last stubborn pockets of fat that stand between you and your goals.

Dr. Thakur uses the latest forms of liposuction - SmartLipo® and BodyTite®  - which both remove fat from around your abdomen and tighten skin. With SmartLipo, a laser heats the fat, breaking it down fat so it’s easier to suction through a cannula. BodyTite is similar. However, instead of laser technology, it uses radiofrequency energy to melt the fat. Both procedures - performed in our AAAASF Credited Operating Suite - are truly modern-day cures for that stubborn fat.

If you’re worried about discomfort during this procedure, we offer general anesthesia with an anesthesiologist or local and oral sedation.

The fat removal in our lipo procedure is permanent as your body won’t regenerate fat cells, but it’s important that you work to maintain your weight because your existing fat cells can still grow larger. SmartLipo and BodyTite shouldn’t be considered a weight loss technique, but rather a body sculpting procedure that does wonders for areas like the muffin top.

In excess

If you’ve recently lost a good amount of weight or had a child, you may be dismayed to find that you have excess skin left over. Your skin can only undergo so much stretching before it begins to lose elasticity, especially as you age. So, while you may shed the pounds around your middle, your skin may not be able to bounce back to what it once was.

As well, no matter your age, if you’ve recently carried a large child, or perhaps multiple babies, the most effective way to gain back your flat abdomen is through a tummy tuck. This procedure also allows Dr. Thakur to cut away any skin that’s marred by stretch marks.

With a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, Dr. Thakur goes in and removes the excess tissue and, if necessary, she pulls your abdominal muscles back together to help you maintain tone and firmness. During the surgery, she makes an incision along your lower abdomen and lifts your skin away from your muscle. After repairing your muscles, she pulls your skin back down taut, removes any excess tissue, and stitches it back together. If need be, she makes a new hole for your belly button so that everything is in its proper place after.

You should only consider a tummy tuck if you are at a stable weight. If you gain weight again or have another child, your skin will stretch again and affect the results of your surgery.

A tummy tuck procedure does require more downtime than SmartLipo because of the larger incisions and the work that Dr. Thakur performs both inside and out, which needs time to heal.

A combination effort

Some of our clients opt for both a liposuction and a tummy tuck if tissue and fat play equal roles in their muffin tops. For example, while Dr. Thakur performs a tummy tuck, she can go in with her SmartLipo system and remove excess pockets of fat so that when she draws your skin tight, you won’t have any unsightly bulges.
