Neuromodulator or Dermal Filler: Which is Right for You?

If you want to get your feet wet in the world of anti-aging cosmetics, neuromodulators and dermal fillers are a great place to start. These two cosmetic injectables provide instant results that can temporarily erase the years from your face.

How these injectables approach anti-aging, however, are entirely different. To help you figure out which treatment will best meet your goals, here’s what Dr. Mrudangi S. Thakur tells her patients in Jefferson Valley, New York, to get them started.

The aging face

Before we get into what cosmetic injectables can do for your face, it’s important to understand the forces you’re dealing with. As you age, several things are at play. First and foremost, your skin begins to lose collagen and elastin, which are responsible for tone and elasticity. This process usually begins in your 30s, but it really ramps up in your 40s and 50s when your hormone levels begin to drop.

The second factor is the migration of fat in your face. As your skin loses elasticity, the fat beneath your skin begins to move, leaving sunken, hollow skin in its wake.

The third factor is general exposure. Over the years, your face usually is the first part of your body to greet the world, which means it’s seen its fair share of sun, wind, and everything else the environment can throw at it. As a result, your skin feels the effects of the abuse and breaks down.

Lastly, every time you squint, smile, or furrow your brow, you’re creating well-worn paths in your skin that end up as both deep and fine lines. As these actions add up, so do your wrinkles.

The fixes

To tackle the aging face, we offer injectables that do one of two things: 1) Neuromodulators relax the muscles responsible for creating wrinkles and fine lines; and 2) Dermal fillers are hyaluronic acids that add volume to areas where your collagen and elastin has disappeared.

The most common neuromodulator is Botox®, which you’ve likely heard of. We offer other brands of neuromodulators called Dysport® and Xeomin®, but they all accomplish the same thing: They start to work in 72 hours and you will achieve the full result in 2 weeks, and reduce the lines around your eyes, between your brows, and on your forehead, for up to four months.

When it comes to fillers, we offer Juvéderm®, Restylane®, and Radiesse®. We also offer Sculptra® which is a polylactic acid. We use these products to fill in the parentheses lines around your mouth and fill in the vertical lines around your lips. We also can use fillers to plump your lips and cheeks, giving you a more youthful look. Fillers last from 6 months to 2 years depending on what is used and where.

Dividing your face

Since neuromodulators and dermal fillers fulfill different tasks on different areas of your face, choosing between them depends entirely upon your goals.

It might be helpful to think of neuromodulators as a cosmetic procedure for the top half of your face, while the dermal fillers go to work on the bottom half.

If you’re only concerned about the wrinkles around your eyes, brows, and forehead, why not try a neuromodulator to see if you like the effect? The procedure is relatively painless and the results are almost immediate.

Once you get an idea of the effect of the injectable, you may want to turn your efforts downward and tackle the lower half of your face.

Ultimately, the beauty of these two treatments is that you don’t have to choose either one or the other. Neuromodulators and dermal fillers complement each other very nicely and work together to create a younger-looking version of yourself.
